The hippocampus is the CPU of the mind.
It is basically a correlator
that accepts data input from the senses in the active state,
and from stored memory when there is little sensory input.
The hippocampus correlates data,
and activates the glandular system,
which in turn activates the muscular system,
generating approach or avoidance or caution response.
If the incoming data correlates with
pain or life threatening ROM (Instinct),
or RAM (Pain knowledge),
fight or flight secretions are generated.
If the incoming data correlates with
pleasure or life prolonging ROM (Instinct),
or RAM (Pleasure knowledge),
approach secretions are generated.
The approach (Pleasure) and avoidance (Pain) gradients
are similar for man and animals,
and as the avoidance gradient is steeper,
frequently, animals and man get locked
into approach/avoidance situations,
where they oscillate about approaching and
going away. If you get locked into one of these loops,
the best thing to do is flip a coin.
When there is little sensory input,
the hippocampus semi-randomly correlates memory against memory.
This is what is called thinking,
which is different from reacting.
In other words, when you are relaxing or sleeping
high pleasure and high pain correlations can occurs
In both cases you have put together two sets of data
and have gained an insight.
In the waking state the hippocampus is processing a lot of sensory input,
( Correlating ROM and RAM with sensory input.)
whereas in the deep sleep state it is processing memory data.
( Correlating ROM and RAM with RAM data.)
The degree of correlation determines
the amount of glandular secretions,
and the "fixing"of the sensory conditions in memory.
Sometimes a blow on the head
deactivates the hippocampus temporarily,
and no correlation and fixing occurs.
Mind is the root of physics, science, religion,
psychology, sociology, government, etc.
For example,
man's intellectual systems are driven by man's hard wiring.
As man is hardwired to try to survive
( Be "conserved" ), he constructs systems
in which objects vary in a neutral media.
Physics is based on "conserved" objects
that vary in an isotropic and homogenous medium.
Religion is based on an eternal object (Soul)
varying in an everlasting medium (Heaven).
Language is based on objects (Nouns)
varying (Verbs) in various media.
It is interesting to see that language allows for non-neutral media,
and thus the termination of objects,
whereas physics strives to emulate religion
with its' search for immutable objects
that vary in isotropic and homogenous media.
