Consciousness

It seems to me that consciousness is when the thalamus is active,

and short time memory,
which can only process a few items for a few minutes,
is associated with the hippocampus,

and that data is stored long term memory,
when high levels of pain or pleasure,
activate the pituitary gland,
and this in turn "fixes" the sensory input.

Apparently, the thalamus likes to work the day shift,
and shuts down at night, or when hit hard on the head.

This is a natural result of Natural Selection,
as those creatures that used the thalamus actively
during the day when the dangers were greatest,
tended to survive. It is also natural
to rest the thalamus at night,
when there is a reduced sensory input,
and this is good for the creature, as
it lightens the load on the nervous system,
and the attendant load on the muscles from
heightened alertness and tension.

In other words, if you are processing input,
or looping old memories as input (Thinking),
your thalamus is active, and you are conscious.

If you are experiencing great pleasure or pain,
you are committing sensory input (Or looping) to
long term memory.
